What I Believe (and What I Don’t)

I believe in equal opportunity. My beliefs may be equally disagreeable to the liberals, conservatives, fundamentalists, atheists, agnostics, people of any faith, or no faith (may God help you). If you are easily offended, please go back to the Home page.

This is my basic beliefs in God and my relationship with Him. The list is by no means exhaustive.

I expect some readers will not relate to my beliefs. I welcome those who share my faith and respect those who do not even believe there is a God, let alone believe Jesus is the Son of God. Even those who believe in Christ may not agree with my views on various issues. It is up to the individual to seek the Truth for oneself. The Truth shall stand on its own.

Pilate once asked Jesus, "What is Truth?" However, he was too impatient. He went out of the room before Jesus could give him the answer. We missed out on Jesus' own definition of the Truth. Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life." Knowing Him is knowing the Truth.

I have no intention to convert anyone reading this site. However, I do not wish to hide my faith and love for God because He never hides Himself from me.

Summary of my Beliefs about God

  1. My belief in God is not based on the Apostle’s creed and the Nicene Creed, but the statements in the creed do summarize my belief.
  2. If God had never revealed Himself to us, we would never have an understanding of God.

About Jesus

  1. God reveals Himself to us in various ways. The most far-reaching revelation was through His own son Jesus who was born as a human being, suffered, died, rose from the dead and ascended to heaven. Through His life on earth, we have an idea of what God is like.
  2. We can be at peace with God through the work of Jesus on the cross.
  3. Jesus is the Christ (Messiah). He is the Way for us to reconcile with God.
  4. Jesus will come back to earth again.

About the Bible

  1. The Bible is the Word of God. It is the special revelation of God to the human race. However, God is infinite; the Bible cannot provide all the information that concerning God. God does not live in a box.
  2. The interpretation of the Bible is based on one’s cultural and personal experience. There is no absolute, perfect formula to produce the infallible interpretation.
  3. The initial intended audience of the scripture was at least over two thousand years ago. In order to have a better understanding of the Bible, we have to understand the cultural and historical background of the intended audience. We cannot practice verbatim every phrase in the Bible in the 21st century. (Most Christian women do not cover their heads when they are out in public. Even some churches still insist women wear hats or cover their heads when they are in the church building.) It is more important to understand why the authors said what they said and to follow their reasoning than to blindly follow rituals set up by human interpretation of the Bible.

About Cultures

  1. God reveals Himself to many nations and cultures, not just the Jews and Europeans, or Western cultures.
  2. No culture is superior to another. Therefore, no culture should impose their practice on another.
  3. How we worship God depends on our individual upbringing.
  4. One does not need to abandon one's own culture in order to accept Christ.
